10 things every EVE Online player should know

EVE Online veterans are all aware that it's not the easiest MMORPG to jump into and that it's got a steep learning curve, with a hardcore player following. So I've put together another list to help players understand the nature of EVE, before they set out to make a living in New Eden. A kind of reality check if you will.
  1. The only place where you're safe in EVE is either docked or offline, otherwise you're mostly fair game.
  2. You will eventually get podded. It's nothing personal.
  3. So make sure your clone is up to date
  4. At any given time, make sure you're always training a skill.
  5. EVE is like a sandbox with landmines. Deal with it.
  6. You're flying in a cocoon full of liquid, known as a pod. Not behind the controls of a ship.
  7. Flying a ship anywhere in EVE is like gambling, only fly what you're willing to lose.
  8. CONCORD exists to punish, not to protect.
  9. If you're going to be in a low sec system for a while, create 2 or more safe spots, just in case.
  10. Pirates are not griefers, they're as much a part of EVE as you are.
So there you have it. If you're looking for a more extensive list, make sure to visit the "Tips and Advice" page that CCP has put together. They've got more tips and advice and provide additional details.

Fly safe, or die trying!

Only one comment: for #1 even offline you are not safe depending on the circumstances (i.e. agression timers and scan probers, or being warp scrambled before logoff). :)

Great list, all very true.

Also about #1, if you leave for a week, you might return to find out BoB now controls your 0.0 space, making it rather difficult to get your stuff :)

They should make this list standard material shown to brand new EVE players really.

@Kirith - Absolutely right, though you were already in trouble before you logged off in those cases.

@Syncaine - Yeah, kind of a welcome back surprise. I remember doing a corp ops where at the end of it, instead of flying back to safe space I simply logged off. Big mistake. When I logged back in, let's just say the local weren't to happy to see me.

@Winterblink - Mandatory indeed!

For those new to the game... would someone explain how one goes about creating a 'safe spot' ?

Do you just warp to somewhere, cancel it half way and bookmark the location?
Or is there some way to just pick a place in space?

@Robert - Follow the instruction on the Advice and Tips section on the EVE-Online.com site which is

to make a good safe spot, click on add bookmark in your places folder while in warp, then find that bookmark before you come out of warp and go to it. Find another spot off that track to warp to and do the bookmark thing again .This will place you between 3 points and make you very hard to find.

Hope this helps!

@CrazyKinux

That is perfect! Thank you very much :)

great list indeed CK. Oh and BTW 27 seconds is all the time it takes for a good scanning ship to pin you down. Granted the on-board scanner is fooled with the S directions ( which are very good BTW)

Thanks Manasi!

That's why you should be moving between more than one safe spot!

the logging off thing hit home when ....

back during the XMas where you could mine ark and bis off the grid thus the npcs couldnt find you so we go into the habit of afk mining ark in indys

so a bit of time goes by the grids start moving elim this exploit then CCP nerfs Npc behavior from pissed off honey bees to fresh from africa killer bees

I log back into the belt just 1000 m under a swarm of 10-14 cruisers who immediately attack and scramble me -their leader was a hard hitting megrathron

I also happened to be in my afk from eve CEO's BS back when you didnt mine out a BS quickly at all-thank god I was rich from the afk ark mining

Yeah, AFK is never a good practice in EVE. I know a few pirates who can't resist the temptation of podding AFKers. I can understand why.
