The Evolution of the EVE Blog Pack

When I first created the EVE Online Blog Pack, it had almost 20 members, all of whom I had personally requested to come on board. I had plenty of time to monitor their post frequency and quality. Being unemployed does have its benefits. That was almost two years ago!

Some time after its creation, I even went as far as to lay down some ground rules as to what it took and what was expected of an EVE Blog Pack member. I still had time to patrol the blogs, and make sure people kept their end of the agreement. Today, this is no longer the case. And at least half of the now 40-member Blog Pack blogs are outdated, haven't had a post in quite some time, or post on a very irregular schedule.

Today, this all comes to an end!

Tonight, you and I will start to lay down the foundation of a new Blog Pack. A leaner group of elite EVE Online Bloggers.

But to do this I need your help. Your input. Your opinion.

I need you to take a look at the current Pack, pick and choose the ones you want to keep, and male a list. The new Blog Pack will have 21 members. That's 20 EVE Online blogs of exceptional quality, who provide useful and helpful information to capsuleers. The 21st blog will be mine.

I also need your feedback as to who should be part of this new Pack. Who deserves to be on that list. It could be your blog, or a corpmates, or a blog that you regularly visit and find insightful. But with all the new EVE blog out there, this is something I simply cannot do alone. This is where you come in!

Please use the comments below to suggest blogs you'd like to see on the Pack. Over the next week or so, I'll review all these suggestion, make a first pass at that list, then ask you to take your picks. I'd like to see blogs from PvPers, Industrialist, Pirates, Manufacturer. Lets have some variety here! I know these blogs are out there. I know a few good ones.

I'm willing to invest my time to improve things, if you're willing to do your part!

I look forward to your feedback!

Here is my suggestion...

Have a 2 week period for "Nominations", during which people can nominate themselves and others.

Then create a survey or poll and have an open community vote. The top 20 blogs take up their seats as the new blog pack.

Make an event out of this, create some buzz, it will likely spring new life into some once vacant blogs, and possibly even cause some new blogs to pop up.

I really only read the blogs I get fed on Capsuleer, but the ones I look forward too the most are:

EVE Online Wormholes
Roc's Ramblings
Rifter Drifter
Epileptic Rift
Eve Newb
The Travels of Black Claw
Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah
K162 Space
Life in Lowsec
Rettic's Log: The Chronofile

Anonymous said...

Rifter Drifter
Ecliptic Rift

Don't really got time to sift through all of em but those should surely be on it.

Anonymous said...

http://www.ninveah.com/ Should be in, and Roc Wieler's Eve Ramblings.

It would make me sad if I had to leave, being one of the initial members, but my content hasn't been that great, though lately it's gotten better as I am playing more again !

Anonymous said...

Well being one of the founding 20, and always trying to post goo information (paying attention to the rules) I would still like to be included in the new list. Who knows, what will happen in the future maybe the time of the mule is past....hell I don't know. Made a ton of friends and whatnot so we shall certainly see.

Anonymous said...

This somehow motivates me to start increasing my post quantity and quality, time to make some notes from some post writing guides and make it a habit to write anything down that might turn into a post.

Unknown said...

The vain part of me would like to see my blog included but i know there are blogs out there that are more deserving..

a few that arnt mine id lilke to see.."aggresive tendancies" awsome pvp blog..."the beginnings of piracy" good low sec action, and a newer players blog id go for "eve SOB"
"a vasty nothingness" is another one thats normally good.

really hard to narrow it down to 21...cant we have like 40...lol

Adam said...

I'm not sure what the rules are/were, but i really like Jump On Contact (http://jumponcontact.com/)

Carole Pivarnik said...

Obviously I think Life in Low Sec belongs there. My posting frequency is not likely to change due to RL time constraints, but considering the number of followers I have (181 as I write this), the shout-outs I get in game, and the fact that I log into EVE Online nearly every day for at least an hour and have done so for over three years, LILS deserves a spot.

I read and enjoy a lot of blogs but there are maybe a dozen that stand out due to content quality, posting frequency, and excellent writing. I'll email that list to you.

Carole Pivarnik said...

Oh--and I like Anthony's suggestion in the first comment. Letting the community decide--or at least weigh in--in an anonymous poll where the results are hidden until voting is concluded is a good approach.

Anonymous said...

Sorry for forgetting you Mynxee I think you also deserve a spot, I still check out your blog regularly

Thank you all for your comments, suggestions and input. It's all appreciated.

As for the process in which the final 20 will be chosen, I thought it was clear that YOU, the EVE Blogging Community would have you say when I wrote "Over the next week or so, I'll review all these suggestion, make a first pass at that list, then ask you to take your picks".

D'you really think I'm gonna do this all by myself!! :p

Your INPUT will be required!!

To be quite honest, my blog should just be listed 20 times. No one else even compares to me. I will allow you to be the 21st on the list as a show of appreciation though CK. You're welcome!

Anonymous said...

My first choice is Kirith's blog - I start my Eve blog reading there and then go on to others.

Others I like to read and should be in the pack, imo:
Rifter Drifter - lots of good reads there lately
Manasi, the Mule - I like to read his slant on things
Letrange's blog - consistently informative and interesting across a wide range of Eve topics
Black Claw - the info from OUCH re learning to PVP keeps us in touch with the newer player experiences
Kane Rizzel - a pirate's view, and he relates the excitement he experiences very well
Flashfresh - another pirate slant that I like reading.

Lots of others are worthy, but these are my top pics.

I will shamelessly suggest my blog, www.podlogs.com/tehmastersword

As for who to keep, if you cut these blogs from the pack, I will emoragequit. You have been warned, CK!

Ecliptic Rift
EVE Newb
EVE Online Wormholes
Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah
Nashh Kadacr's EVE Blog (When he is actually posting, its great)
Rifter Drifter
Roc's Ramblings

Aside from Nashh's lack of posting, those are the most active, entertaining, informative, and overall best blogs in my opinion on the list, and they truly deserve to stay. That isnt to say that the others arent good, just that these are my favorite

Anonymous said...

A poll would be best with lets say 5 choices at max, but that would require you to list every eve blog out there in the poll.

jtyler said...

Glad to see you're re-energizing the blog pack again CK. It's good for a clean up once in a while. Here's my personal list of top reads:

- Ecliptic Rift
- Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah
- Rifter Drifter
- Life in Low Sec
- EVE Travel by Mark726
- Roc's Ramblings
- Wench with a Wrench
- EVE Monkey
- EVE Newb

And of course the Chronofile is always up for throwing its hat in the ring.

I really like the lineup as it stands now, but if I had to choose my favorites:

Ecliptic Rift
Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah
Rifter Drifter

The Wondering Druid Of Tranquility
Eve Weekend Warrior

Also, that Guns Ablaze blog (www.jagerda.com) is pretty awesome. ;)

I cant tell you ideas wich blogs to put up there, as everyone has their own favourite.

I like reading on wormholes for example, so the ones that live there I love to read from, but other readers might find this boring.

This is why you have a tough job choosing.. will you go after popularity? post frequency? material quality?

I dont envy you! :P

But speaking for myself, i´ve read www.evebloggers.com more often lately, because they have more variety in blogs, and its always nice to find something new.. so maybe its time to freshen up the blogpack ;)

Letrange said...

In case anyone was wondering I had requested that I be pulled from the blog pack since I am in burn out mode and my posting consistency is down. I notice that I'm still posting regularly enough to justify staying in, but I feel that the quality and length have taken a hit as I putter more than anything else.

I appreciate those above who said my blog should be in the pack but I feel that it should wait until I'm back in EVE full time instead of my current "keep the skills skilling up and make a bit of easy isk mode".

Mynxee,
Manasi,
Kirith,

are the ones I absolutely read regularely. The rest are more of a time to time thing.

Westley's Rifter Drifter has been excellent recently although I didn't follow his transition to 0.0 when it happened.

Anonymous said...

I was always a bit uncomfortable being on the roll, since I'm not without bias and my blogs are rarer than T3 frigates. Now would be a good time to strike me off :)

In any case, we're hoping to roll out a more professional EON site in a few months. Still bloggy, but not blog-based :)

I was chatting in the bloggers channel and two other slots occured to me.

'Guest Host' for one month you add a blogger so they can spread their wings and maybe gain a following, knowing that they are on the pack for only a month

'Linker' Find a voracious reader who can summarize some of the blogs that didn't make the cut and link to them so we have a wider field for those willing to click and extra link. That would be a once a week post and might not be one that counted towards your self impoosed 21 limit . . .

Pls keep Letrange!! Diversity is an important part of the blog pack, imho, and Letrange brings exceptionally well thought out posts on advanced industry and alliance leadership - a unique perspective in the current pack. Even if his post frequency is a bit down, the high quality makes up for the low quantity. Just my two cents.

Awesome stuff CK, blog pack is my favorite read every morning at work.

I'm putting in a vote for 'Learning to Fly' - http://www.arukemos.com/ (mentioned above). I also follow the Blog-List on Capsuleer, my choices would be as follows:

A Mule In Eve - Always informative and his stories are something every aspiring pilot should enjoy reading.

Ecliptic Rift - A good read and an active blog, one that I keep my eye on.

K162space– I just find it personally interesting as my next few months will be spend almost exclusively in W-Space.

Kane-Rizzel– Thought not as active as some, the ones I have seen I enjoy a great deal.

Life in Low Sec – It’s an interesting place, from an interesting pilot, good read.

Rifter Drifter – Who doesn’t like to read Wensley’s blog?

Yarrbear Tales– Could post a bit more often but I think he writes well, and the audience listens. I’d definitely keep him.

Lastly, I would like to see my own blog (WH-Dwellers) show up there, I’m new to blogging so I’ll understand if I don’t make the cut, but I will be/am an expert in my field of WH-Dwelling and I think the blog could use someone who knows their stuff, K162space is a good read, I'll definitely be listening in, and there's definitely room enough in this blog for more than one WH Blogger.

Mentioned in order of appearance on screen, others I did not mention are still great but these are the ones I find the most amusing/informative to read.

Special mention for EVE Online Wormholes, I’ve learned a lot from reading this blog and hope to be of similar use to other pilots from tales of my own wormhole-dwelling experiences, I’ll miss reading from SD.

P.S. first comment using links, had to view source to see how others handled links, think I got it all out there now hehe.

Honestly, this is good to see. CK has definitely put a lot of EVE bloggers on the map with his efforts here, but IMO the current blog pack is extremely tired and needs a good dose of liven-the-hell-up. Many of the blog pack are inactive while a whole bunch more are spammy or just plain unreadable. I've got a few regular reads in some of the above suggestions (Hi guys! *waves*), but some of the current blog pack definitely do not qualify as "elite" blogs.

Get out there and explore that blogging universe a bit.

(And let us use our blog's URL to post, CK. Having to post with a Google account is no bueno.)

-K162 Space
-EVE Online Wormholes

This isn't everybody, but these are my favorite to read. My only wish is that WordPress and private hosting sites allowed me to follow from the Blogger Dashboard...

Kane Rizzel (he's active again \o/)
Yarrbear Tales

Just to include my [late] comment and thoughts about blogs that I think would be essential reading with no disrespect to those not specifically mentioned.

Older Blogs
Letrange's blog is still a keeper, in spite of his efforts to get himself tossed in the bin. The quality of the information far our weighs his brevity [and that is often a misnomer]. As many readers as possible should be able to find him everywhere.

Kirith Kodachi's blog is another one of those reads that is immediately recognizable as a winner.

Newer Blogs
Penny Ibramovic's blog does a good job of representing the life of a pilot in EVE. Whatever manages to happen to Penny, you'll find out via her wonderful journalling of her adventures.

Blake's witty rendition of the life of people living out beyond the edge is a wonderful read that shouldn't be missed.

When I started blogging, I thought sure I should be a member of the Blog Pack. I would certainly enjoy it and be honoured to be included and have tried to be consistent and worthwhile in my posting.

My favs from the current pack:
Rifter Drifter
K162 Space
Life in Low Sec

Some new ones I'd like to see:
EVE Travel [http://evetravel.wordpress.com/] (I like that it's got a focused approach)
Chocolate Heaven [http://www.minmatart.com/] (maybe a little too new, but promising)

I'm flattered (and thrilled, of course) to see a few mentions earlier in this thread of my new-ish blog Jump On Contact (http://jumponcontact.com/). I would be really excited to be included in the pack.

The one's I read the most and consistently are:
Roc's Ramblings
Rifter Drifter
A Mule In Eve
Life In Low Sec
Inner Sanctum of Ninveah
Kane Rizzel
Flashfresh
Sweet Little Bad Girl
The Wandering Druid of Tranquility

Why these nine? I like the writing style, the content they choose to write about, and another important factor is they are all available to me through Capsuleer. Simply put these are the one's I look forward to reading.

FWIW, I also enjoy Ecliptic Rift, but I haven't been reading that blog as long or consistantly as the others.

Let's see. My votes would be for (in no particular order):

Captain's Log
The Travels of Blackclaw
Roc's Ramblings
Sweet Little Bad Girl
Ecliptic Rift
The Wandering Druid of Tranquility
Inner Sanctum of Ninevah
A Mule in Eve
Life in Lowsec
A Merry Life and a Short One
A Ghost Blog

I've probably missed a few.

The blogs I read most are:
Manasi's
Wensley's
Kirith's
Ga'len's
Halan's
and Roc's
So please don’t forget those! I also can’t help myself to peek at Casiella's, Mynxee's and Myrhial's blog posts. I mostly use the Capsuleer app for blog-pack reading, so I am not sure if I do help much in the way of page hit’s though 0:-)

I want to add a blog that I'm not sure a lot of folks know about, but Seismic Stan does some great writing at Freebooted:

http://freebooted.blogspot.com/

Just look it over. Easily Blog Pack material.

The Captain's Log
The Travels of Black Claw
A merry life and a Short One
A mule in Eve
My God, its full of stars
Kane Rizzel

I am on capsuleer, and I would love to see these stay.

Hi CK,

Just wanted to say that whatever happens - you need to be on this list. You have made this possible and exposed so many blogs to a much wider audience, mine included. Limiting to 20 is a good idea BUT I think it would also limit crucial exposure for some newer ones. One of the above comments had the idea of a rotating list; this has merit as there is just so much good material out there. One would be foolish not to include them. Maybe set up a system where it isn't just you who manages the blog pack but a small number of us? Each maintaining a sub-list based on topic, genre or some such?

Anyway, all power to you and the other bloggers out there.

I know, I know - I was meant to email you on some other matter CK. Let me get onto it!!!

I live on the current blog pack via capsuleer.
The blogs I read the most are:

My own blog is not what I consider blog pack material. Thanks for the mention Astral. It's essentially a journal I keep as I find my place in new Eden. A few folks read it, and I do hope they find it enjoyable. I myself read it at least once or twice.

Give it a look and leave some comment spam if you like http://evesob.blogspot.com/

Good luck with the new blog pack CK. I'll be posting and voting as needed.

Cheers

K-162 Space by Blake AND MININGZEN
http://k162space.wordpress.com/

Blake AND MININGZEN's witty rendition of the life of people living out beyond the edge is a wonderful read that shouldn't be missed.

Fix'd. Get it right, people!

Anyrate, speaking for Blake and myself(without telling him), we'd be honored to remain on the blogroll and apparently a good 20 other people liked us enough to mention the website.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend anyone else. My brain remembers events, not names.

Wait, no, I remember Specter and Roc, because the first insulted me and I won a contest hosted by the second.

Again, I follow all the blogs on capsuleer and have yet to be annoyed/dissapo-
/* trolls through everyone's backlog */
Have only found a few posts that I was annoyed/disappointed at.

Anyway, I can't recommend anyone else because then I'd have to recommend everyone else and then some others. Weak, I know.

Wait, no, I found an opinion. Can I down-vote or un-vote or anti-vote Specter? Twenty times?
My hatemail entry for his "I'm quitting eve o wait lol j/k (again)" contest didn't deserve a mention in his eyes so he's obviously a literary hack w/ no talent.

Oh, and apparently being able to make posts for k162space doesn't mean I can post in it's name.

Big-time capsuleer reader, and I have to give shouts to my favorites on there to read:

Mynxee's Life In Low Sec: makes me want to shed my furry carebear skin and go get blown up in low sec ;).

Blake AND Miningzen's ( ;) ) K162 Space: great stuff on WH living!

Shae Tiann's Sweet Little Bad Girl: By far my favorite source of eve fan-fiction. Keep em coming lady!

Ga'len's Eve Druid: Just the sheer output from Ga'len is amazing. He's a blog-pack staple.

Casiella Truza's Ecliptic Rift: Same as Ga'len, great consistent, and regular posting. Also a great source of in-character fan-fiction I might add!

Letrange's Eve Blog: As a fellow builder in eve, I could read his posts on raw production numbers and mineral markets all day. Really well thought out posts.

These are a couple non blog-pack members that I really wish would get on the list so that I can read them on capsuleer:

Mike Azariah's A Missioner In Eve: GREAT in-character posts! This would be my first read every day on capsuleer if it was in the blog pack. I love his stories.

Aiden Mourn's Finders and Keepers: I hate the ninjas when they come into my missions, but God do I love reading about their adventures. Finders and Keepers is a favorite, it makes me giggle every time.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great comments, effort, feedback and offers you've all been putting forward!

If I still do this after 5 years, it's because of the amazing feedback I get from a great community and some great folks like you!

Thanks for sticking around!

I would like to nominate : http://evemetagaming.blogspot.com
as a candidate for the blogroll. Not enough blogs for that slice of the community.

Thanks

I'll narrow it down to my top three, in no particular order:

1) Rifter Drifter
2) My Loot, Your Tears
3) Finders & Keepers

I believe my blog should remain included. I've been a faithful, regular poster, with very little content that is not eve related. I have a fairly large following as well. Also, I know a black kitty with a red light saber that can show you a thing or two about cauterized wounds if you do not keep me.

That said, The list of "elite eve blogs" in my mind would be these:

a merry life and a short one
Sweet Little Bad Girl
Flashfresh - The Pirate.
Roc's Ramblings
Life in Low Sec
Kane Rizzel - a Pirates Perspective
Rifter Drifter(This needs to be updated with Wensley's new blog)

I'll add another thumbs up for http://wormholekiller.blogspot.com/

I'm quite happy with the blogs that you have on Capsuleer.

Rifter Drifter
K162space
Eve Online Wormholes
The Planet Risk Show
Life in low sec
Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah

to name a few.

Lea said...

Just my 2 cents...

* Eve Travel
* A Mule in EVE
* Ecliptic Rift
* Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah
* Life in Low Sec
* Roc's Rambling
* Travels of Black Claw
* Sweet Little Bad Girl
* Wandering Druid of Tranquility
* Yarrbear Tales

Though there are lots of incredible pirate blogs out there.. I think there should be more that are not yarr-centric... which seems to be the case currently.

Definitely keep/add the following:
- A Merry Life and a Short One : Interesting stories by the great Hallan Turrek.
- A Mule in EVE : Info about 0.0 fights, ships fittings, and multiple howtos.
- Ecliptic Rift : A lot of industrial info with bits of random thoughts.
- EVE Newb : Lots of lulz at expense of carebear tears.
- EVE Online Wormholes : One of the two best w-space blogs.
- Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah : Very similar to Mule's, but from the "good guys" point of view.
- K162space : This is the other best w-space blog.
- Letrange's EVE Blog : A lot of industrial info with a good amount of w-space adventures.
- Life In Low Sec : It has Mynxee. Enough said.
- Our EVE : I don't think is part of the pack. Very informative. Worth everyones attention.
- Rifter Drifter : First a pirate and now a great 0.0 adversary. Always up to date. Great stories.
- Roc's Ramblings : Rulez everyone should follow in EVE.

I generally read via capsuleer, so I have ventured into the interwebs go give some votes:

A Ghost Blog
A Merry Life and a short one
A mule In eve
Diary of a Pod Pilot
Eve Online Worm Hole (this one is excellent)
Sweet Little Bad Girl (one of my favs)

I haven't finished reading all the back log downloaded by capsuleer, so the rest of you bloggers please dont take a not mentioned as a non-vote, I may not have got round to reading you yet.

Wensley
Manasi
Kirith
Mynxee
Letrange
Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah
The Wondering Druid Of Tranquility
Spectre
Kane Rizzel
Flashfresh
Roc
Eve Monkey
00sage00
nashh kadavr
Eve warrior

While many agree with the core ones, there are variants (as there would be). It would be nice if you could just choose the ones you wanted Capsuleer to download without having to stick to the 'pack' I've never been much of a 'L33T' list follower as some may love having a dev blog dissected, others prefer 0.0 related and still others will read pirate blogs. Capsuleer rocks as an application and if this is the only way then so be it, but a Google Reader type of functionality would be more convenient and could be customized to fit the individual user.

just sayin' :-)
