The following is a poem inspired by the raw, harsh, and brutal world of Andor and Rogue One (watch the videos above and below if you need reminding). A series and a film that gave us the true visage of what Star Wars could have been — should have been. The more I rewatch these two cinematographic masterpieces, the more fed up I get with the prequels, the sequels, and the weak series we were force-fed on Disney+.
Yet I still have hope...
They Flinched — A Lament for the Galaxy That Could Have Been
I wanted the dirt beneath the myth.
The rot inside the throne room walls.
I wanted hands that shook on triggers
and men who wept in bathroom stalls.
They gave us puppets. Gave us clowns.
A stumbling Gungan. Dancing bears on forest moons.
They sold the war to children
and set the galaxy to cartoons.
I wanted Anakin undone slowly —
not by dialogue that bled of feeling,
but by the quiet, patient murder
of every good thing he'd stopped believing.
Give me Maul with a history, not just a face.
Give me Dooku's treason as a deep wound, not a speech.
Give me Grievous as something worth fearing —
not a coughing toy just within reach.
Erase the diner. Burn the toy aisle.
Gut every scene that begged to sell.
If you're going to tell a story about fascism,
have the decency to make it hurt like hell.
I wanted Coruscant from the gutter,
where clone troopers numb themselves to sleep,
where senators eat well and sign the orders
that bury worlds six systems deep.
I wanted a Tatooine that crushed you just by standing still —
Owen watching twin suns bleed and saying nothing,
Beru wearing calm like armour over panic,
the boy outside, already lost to something.
I wanted Empire not as spectacle
but as the weight that makes you crawl.
Bureaucrats with stamps and quotas —
the banality that swallows all.
I wanted Scarif's shore. That wave of light.
Two bodies holding on with nothing left.
The kind of ending Lucas never dared —
the kind that trusts the audience with death.
Ferrix showed me what revolt sounds like —
not a fleet, not a throne room duel,
but hammers ringing, bodies pressing forward,
ordinary people done with being fuel.
Luthen knew. He said it plain.
He listed everything he'd killed inside.
That monologue did more for Star Wars
than three prequels and a trilogy's pride.
So strip the fan service. Sink the quips.
Let the camera sit in silence when it needs to.
Let the score carry what words can't,
and trust the audience to bleed, too.
They had a galaxy. They had the myth.
They had the dark, the grief, the weight of it.
And every time it mattered most —
they flinched.
They always flinched.
