Why does the Academy snub sci-Fi? A look at iconic science fiction films that went unrewarded

At last evening's 97th Academy Awards, Dune: Part Two secured two Oscars: Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. While these awards recognize the film's technical excellence, they also highlight the Academy's historical tendency to limit recognition of science fiction (sci-fi) films to technical categories, often overlooking them in major awards such as Best Picture, Best Director, and acting categories.

Historically, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has shown reluctance in honoring sci-fi films in major categories. Notable sci-fi classics like Blade Runner (1982) & Blade Runner 2049 (2018), The Matrix (1999), and Inception (2010) received acclaim for their groundbreaking visuals and storytelling but were largely confined to technical awards. For instance, The Matrix won four Oscars, all in technical categories, without nominations for Best Picture or Best Director. 2018's Blade Runner 2049 won for Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography, but wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, nor Best Director.

EVE Online wins top MMORPG Awards

For a second year in a row EVE Online has won top honours at the MMORPG.com 2006 Reader's Choice Award Winners. And it's easy to understand why: EVE Online itself first and for most, the community and last but not least, CCP.

I mean taking into account the size of the player base, many other MMORPGs "could" have won any if not all of the categories; World of Warcraft comes quickly to mind of course, but there are many others. But that's a bit besides the point. Of the players that took the time to complete the ballots, most chose EVE as the clear winner. It's all a question of opinion!

Having said that, EVE Online IS a great MMORPG and deserved to win most of these categories, if not all, as it did. Graphically, EVE kicks every other MMORPG out there, period. PVE, a tough one, since I haven't had enough time to dedicate to other MMORPGs to judge them properly. PVP wise, 100%, no questions asked. Ever heard of EVE TV and the alliance championships. Story wise, again EVE stands out with an original storyline, some great chronicles and some great community written short stories.

Overall, I can't but agree with the awards EVE got. CCP deserved no less for its amazing achievement. Here here for our Icelandic devs!

I'm looking forward to 2007, the rest of Kali's deployment and another Reader's Choice Award!

EVE Online voted Best MMORPG, Best PvP, Best Graphics and favorite Developer

Last week, MMORPG.com released the results of its Reader's Choice Awards in which EVE Online and CCP won 4 awards.

  • Reader's Choice Favorite Company at 44%
  • Reader's Choice Best Graphics at 51%
  • Reader's Choice Best PvP at 55%
  • Reader's Choice Best Game at 40%
Though I voted for EVE Online for all these categories, I'm happily surprised it did that well overall. This shows the quality of the game and the dedication of the EVE Community. Seriously folks, we're that great, I'm telling you!
