The joy of simple, no-fuss gaming: why I miss games like Dungeon Siege

Somewhere along the way, video games became homework.

I don’t mean that in a bad way—there’s something deeply rewarding about mastering complex systems, experimenting with intricate builds, and deep-diving into mechanics. But sometimes, I just want to sit down, boot up a game, and have fun without watching YouTube guides, reading skill trees, or learning optimal button rotations.

That’s why I miss games like Dungeon Siege.

Too Many Games, Too Little Time

Back in late January, I ran a poll on my Twitter profile asking if other gamers out there add the same pattern of buy tons of games, most of which we'd never finish.

Turns out I wasn't alone in this behaviour. I can't speak for all of us, but I can tell you that the "collector's bug" is definitely at play in my case. If a sequel - or sequels - to a game I own show up on some Steam sale, I will for sure have an itch to scratch and will likely but those games. Will I actually start playing them immediately, or soon after purchasing them? Most likely not. But there's a good chance I'll pick them up and run through them some time in the future.

And it is with most games I purchase these days. I picked up Frostpunk and Cities Skylines months, if not years ago, and only recently started playing.

EVE Blog Banter 68: If I show you my rig, will you show me yours?

They say "Better late than never..." Well that's all fine and dandy, but it makes for a shitty first impression. Or in this case, for a shitty re-introduction. I wanted to jump back into the  EVE Blog Banters, my child of yesteryears, who's all grown up and soon turning six, with a BANG! But the Blog Father is bit rusty, and three days late will have to do!

Enough ramblings (damn, I AM getting old!).

Made it into the Darkspore Beta. But when will I jump in?

Earlier this week I managed to wedge myself into the Darkspore Beta thanks to the folks at GameShadow! I was very excited to have a chance another Beta and was looking forward to that first moment, when the screen loads for the very first time on a new canvas of virtual pleasure and a new beginning awaits you. So after some fiddling with my EA account, a few downloads and updates to their client, I was ready to jump on board.

Then I read a short sentence: "Beta servers are closed" What? Ah, okay. They open up the servers only at specific times. Better check the forums to learn when. Only fortunately I didn't have any time this week-end to do just that. With a fully loaded social calendar, and the MiniCKs to entertain and train, very little time was left to gaming.

Let's hope this week provides me with the oppornutity to do so. In the mean time, I'll have these promotional videos to drool over. Man, I can't wait!

Looks fun no? Are you in the BETA?

Speedlinking for the week-end of December 11th, 2010

The last 2 weeks have been crazy in RL, but never the less I'm slowly getting ready to get back into the game. I'm about to get ready to get into some 1vs1 PvP with a folks who responded to my plea for a sensei. So I should I some interesting news and postings in the next few days. But for now, here's the latest articles that have come to my attention:

Speedlinking for the week-end of November 27th, 2010

Those of you who have been long time readers, know that I use to have this regular series of post called the Speedlinks, where I would provide a list of posts, articles and videos related to EVE Online in some way or another, or in some cases, not at all.

I'm happy to tell you that the series is back, thanks to the ease with which Google Chrome allows me to track and collect these bookmarks over the last week. So without further ado, and in no particular order, here are those links:

Making the Pack: 8 new blogs make it into the EVE Online Blog Pack

As I promised earlier this week, the Pack needed a little clean-up. In doing so I've removed myself from the Pack as well as two well know blogs Winterblink.com and Postings from the Edge (by EON's Editor Zapatero). My reasoning was quite simple, all 3 of these blogs are well known and I wanted to shine the spotlight on some new blogs.

Removing these blogs gave me a little more room to add fresh new blood to the Pack. So without further ado, here are the blogs that have been added to the EVE Blog Pack:

Now those keeping tabs will have noticed that this takes the total count of blogs in the Pack to 52. And why not! With the hundreds of blogs out there, why limit ourselves to just 20, or 40 or even 50 for that matter. I say the more, the merrier, as long as the quality and frequency is there. Speaking of which, I've noticed quite a few Pack members with outdated content. Unless they start posting soon, or inform me of a new URL, I might have a few more openings on the Pack in the not so distant future.

So, welcome to the members above. And Venom, since you're the only veteran to return, why don't you show the example to these newbie Pack Members and write a little something!

P.S.: And one last thing. Since I'm no longer in the Pack, I'll need at least one of the Pack Members to write a little something about this post. This is going to be interesting!

EVE Mobile Edition: EVE Online running on an Android Phone [VIDEO]

I first wrote about it way back in 2007, but it looks like we might almost be there. The below video shows an EVE client running on a Motorola DROID (Overclocked to 1. 3GHz Bugless Beast V. 1. 1). I just might get myself a DROID phone soon!

How to get into the EVE Blog Pack...

If I didn't track the hits to the EVE Blog Pack, and instead I measured its success based on the numbers of requests I get in comments, in tweets or emails, it would still come up as one of my most visited posts. And that in of itself is a measure of the quality, diversity and consistency of the content that the Pack members provide to the EVE Community. And we must thank them for it!

But that high measure of quality demands very high standards. I long ago recognized that need and wrote about it back when I wrote about "The Few, the Proud, the EVE Blog Pack Members!". And so, I've always tried removing outdated blogs, either at the request of their owners, or by their inactivity.

This is such a time. Currently the Pack has 4 openings, though I might have a few more free spots if some blogs are not updated shortly (see the list below). Blogs that haven't seen a post in 4 weeks, risk being removed at any given time from the pack. That's just the nature of things. Additionally, I like to ask from time to time if you know of any blogs that should be part of the pack. With the hundreds of EVE Blogs out there, it's now virtually impossible for me to catch all the best. That's why I need your input. So below, you'll also find a list of blogs I'm considering. Should yours be in there? Please leave a comment to let me know.

Might get REMOVED from the Pack:

Might get ADDED to the Pack:

So "How do you get into the EVE Blog Pack"? Here's what Pack members need to do!

[The original post can be found here]

The Privilege of Membership, comes with Responsibilities
As the popularity of the Pack grew, more and more bloggers wanted in. But as my initial goal was to foster both quality and quantity, I couldn't simply accept everyone. There are tons of great EVE blogs out there, all of whom deserve to get noticed. Which is why I've got the EVE Player Blogroll where I list every player's blog as quickly as I get requests. But for the Pack, I wanted to create this sense of belonging to an elite group of bloggers.

So I've decided to limit the members to 51 blogs for now - with a few conditions though.

Being part of the Pack comes with its responsibilities and obligations. The first and foremost is to blog regularly. Ideally a few times a week, at the very least once. And that is a no easy feat, believe me. Real Life often gets in the way - as it should since remember people, this is just a game - and missing a week is not uncommon. But going beyond the 3 week mark puts a Pack member in a situation of potentially being removed from the Pack.

Taking it One Step further
Now, along with the regular blogging and commenting, I want to ask a bit more of the Pack Members. This is what will make the Blog Pack different from my Players Blogroll.

Here's a list of To Dos that all members should strive to accomplish as part of their duties.
  • Blog regularly about EVE Online, a few times a week preferably.
  • Comment on Pack members blogs.
  • Make a post about the EVE Blog Pack (if you haven't done so yet). Make sure to link to it!
  • OPTIONAL: Add other's blog to your Delicious, Reddit, StumbleUpon and/or Technorati accounts.
  • OPTIONAL: Digg posts that you find useful or interesting.
  • When writing a post, try to link to each other posts, bringing the community even closer together.
  • Have a blogroll listing all the Blog Pack members.
Doing all, or some, of these action items will add value to our individual blogs, and will bring the Pack to a whole new level.

Remember, we're each individually responsible for the success of the Blog Pack. It's up to us to decide what we do with it!

Friday Video: The Extreme Gamer Road Trip - EH-450 HD Epson Projector

As I start working on continuing my basement home reno project in the next few months, maybe I should get the EPSON EH-TW450 projector instead of an HD LCD television. Sure looks like a lot of fun to have a 300" HD projection of Mass Effect 2 or Gears of War 3!

The above promotional video is a follow-up to this earlier gig!

Friday Video: Gears of War 3 Ashes to Ashes Trailer [HD]

This lazy console gamer needs to finish Gears of War, buy Gears of War 2 and finish it, before he gets to play this one. And it's not because of lack of liking the game, or wanting to play it.

CrazyKinux's Speedlinking for the week-end of April 18th, 2010

I use to have these EVE Online Speedlinking posts way back when I had the time to roam the EVE InterTubes. Back then, there wasn't as many blogs to cover, and the information was manageable. Today, it would be a full time job to find, to link to, provide a synopsis of these posts, and still have a life. As such, I've decided to provide a list of some of the most interesting blog posts, articles or videos I find and share them with you as is. They'll still contain some EVE Online material, but they often may not. Think of it as a bookmarking attempt at my interests. I hope you still enjoy!

Off Topic: Who knew playing EVE Online could actually save the world!

OK, I may be pushing it here, but after watching this TED presentation by Jane McGonigal, Director of Game Research & Development at the Institute for the Future, till the end, you'll understand.

The ever expanding EVE Blogosphere! - Part 5

"The Fools we are, the more fun we have" the old saying goes. Well, we're getting to be a lot of fools these days, and we sure do know how to have fun! As I'm recuperating at home today, I'm taking the time - between much needed naps - to clean out my Gmail Inbox and starred items. Amongst those are request to get blogs added to the EVE Online Blogroll Lovefest.

And so, I'm very happy to be adding the following blogs to the listing:
  1. Lab Utopia
  2. Rackin' up Bad Karma
  3. Roving Drone (The)
  4. Money or Meteors
  5. Void Burn
  6. Grieflogs
  7. Lord Zekk's Yaarmachine
  8. Scrap Metal & Faction Ammo
  9. zealot (the)
  10. Any more of you out there...
I've also got one spot open on the EVE Blog Pack! So if you have a blog you think should be in the Pack, or know of one, then please let me know about it!
