After Hours, Episode 3 (2016): Rixx Javix and I talk EVE Online, EVE blog banters, and community weirdness

The above is "After Hours Podcast – Episode 3", and it’s a nearly-decade-old (May 2016) chat between the infamous pirate Rixx Javix, and myself — looking back on the “golden age” of EVE blogging and how that whole scene shaped a lot of us.

I came across that old episode while researching for an upcoming project on EVE Online podcasts, past and present (more on that later).

2025: Finding my way back to writing, one post at a time

It’s that time of year when I take a step back and look at what actually happened over the last twelve months.

Going into 2025, I fully intended to blog more consistently. In reality, that consistency only really showed up in the last four months — and if I’m being completely honest, it’s mostly been the last two.

And yet, despite that slow restart, this blog saw more life this year than I expected.

This wasn’t a year of volume. It was a year of re-entry.

After long stretches of relative quiet, 2025 became about finding my rhythm again — figuring out what I still wanted to write about, what felt forced, and what I kept coming back to even when no one was asking for it. Writing sorta stopped being something I planned to do and slowly became something I did again.

Back through the wormhole: rediscovering New Eden years later

A funny thing happened when I started cleaning up my blog a few weeks back. I was just “archiving” old EVE Online posts, fixing dead links, swapping in updated YouTube videos… totally innocent stuff. Right... And then, somehow, I found myself dropped straight into the deep end of the nostalgia pool. One minute I’m fixing a broken link or looking for a working link to an EVE Fanfest video, the next I’m getting bombarded with “Come back to EVE!” ads like Hilmar had personally noticed my footsteps into my EVE archived content.

And honestly? The pull was too strong.

Mix in that "Making of EVE Online" documentary, and the full-on marketing push for Catalyst, CCP’s latest expansion, and resisting New Eden became a losing battle. So I took a peek. Just a tiny one. And, well, you can guess where this is going.

I’ve only been back in the game for, what, the better part of a week now? But it already feels like that surreal combination of coming home and discovering someone completely renovated the place. Sort of like driving by your childhood home. The neighborhood layout is the same… everything else has been upgraded.

Disappointed but undeterred: why you'll never get me to quit helping EVE Bloggers

I've recently come under fire for somehow being a marketing tool of CCP. These accusations, have led others to ponder over my relationship with CCP and as well as question my writing style.

I thought I'd try to respond to these accusations.

It's kind of funny that after putting all these efforts over the last 2 to 3 years helping out other EVE Bloggers (by providing them with opportunities to be in the spotlight through the EVE Blog Pack, win some EVE merchandise, ISKs or GTC, or discuss various aspect of the game in the EVE Blog Banters) that my reputation should be slandered in this way.

It's a bit disappointing to be honest.

I promised myself that this post wouldn't be too long, but bear with me while I tell you a story.

The Beginnings

I started this blog back in 2005. Back then, there were not many other EVE Blogs. Over the years I started gathering links to other EVE blogs, to guides and anything that I found useful or that would help me out playing in EVE. At that time, I had no children and could easily play EVE for 30 to 40 hours a week without facing the wrath of my better-half. Then MiniCK came into our lives, and my gaming time started to suffer.

CrazyKinux's Musings celebrates 5 years of blogging!

Half a decade. Five long years of blogging. Most of it about EVE Online.

Following a recent post by Black Claw (aka Alexia Morgan) about the longest running EVE Online blog, I realized that I had been blogging about MMORPGs in general, and EVE in particular for over 5 years now!

Back then, we were very few EVE Bloggers, and I rarely got any comments or feedback on my posts or questions. I was a difficult time for us, but our continued efforts have paid off. I mean look at where we stand today, with the incredible amount of EVE blogs, and the tremendous activity and buzz that permeates the EVE Online Community. It's something to be proud of and to continue to help nurture!

Here's to another 5 years... and more!!

Allow me the privilege of flattering my ego!

Similar to the above Iteron warping home to some distant orbital station somewhere with the vast universe of New Eden, I find myself warping home to this blog. Full of ideas and renewal. I've got contest results to give a away (remember this?), new posts to write, new ideas to explore, new lists to revisit, and 500 millions ISK to give away. That's right, half-a-billion ISK to give out.

But before we get there, allow me to indulge in some grand delusional scheme that will see my ego grow to the size of the Stay Puft Marshmollow man, before imploding to its normal, above-average standard!

I love stats. I, like many bloggers out there, love to go over this blogs statistics: number of visitors, where they came from, how long did they stay over, where 'd they end up after passing by, as well as what keywords they used to get here. But of all these stats, the one I have the most fun reviewing are the keywords. So lets take a look at the top 20 keywords that get people here, of the last 2000 visits.
    1. eve online blog
    2. eve online screenshot
    3. eve online podcast
    4. eve online guides
    5. eve online corporations
    6. eve blog pack
    7. crazykinux
    8. eve blog
    9. eve online blogs
    10. eve mini client
    11. eve podcast
    12. capsuleer
    13. myrmidon setup
    14. crazy kinux
    15. capsuleer iphone
    16. eve blogs
    17. eve online iphone
    18. eve overview
    19. eve myrmidon
    20. eve online tortuga
What's interesting is that in some cases, the link to this blog doesn't appear on the first page but on the 2nd or 3rd, and in some cases as far as the 5th. Yet they get here! Other interesting findings: Myrmidon is the only ship within the top 20, appearing twice, as does capsuleer, crazykinux, podcast, blog(s) and iPhone. Finally, the only video making that list is Tortuga. Not surprising considering the quality of the video.

OK, well that's enough self centeredness for one day, now I'm off putting together another post so that this one isn't the latest post for too long!

EVE Online and the week of Milestones

The new year has barely started, and already we're being bombarded with new milestones in the world of New Eden.

The world's biggest sandbox MMO, EVE Online, recently surpassed the 45,000 peak concurrent user (PCU) mark. An amazing achievement when you consider that most MMOs run on much smaller servers - of about 5,000 players. All the hard work that has been done over the last few months, as well as the multitude of upgrades planned for the near future will allow for even bigger fleet battles. I look forward to the days where we'll see 1000-plus ship fleet battles! I remember the days when we passed the 10k mark, then the 20k, then 25k! Now we're almost half-way to the 100,00 PCU! I for one am looking forward to CCP's HPC roll-out!

Additionally, we learned today that another capsuleer had reached the 100 million skill point mark. Though this was not the first character to reach that record milestone, it's still a great honor to bestow a fellow capsuleer. As a player who is about to reach the 50 million SP myself , I can vouch how monumental such an achievement is!

Speaking of personal achievements, I'm happy to report that this humble blog reached the impressive mark of 300,000 pageviews yesterday, as well as 200,000 visitors today. I say impressive because in the MMO industry EVE holds a niche position, similar to the Mac in the computer markets. Such results would not be attainable without you, the reader. So thank you for dropping by!

Finally, I leave you with the latest CCP video interview , in which Hilmar mentions that the next EVE expansion will be released on March 10th, followed 2 days later by a retail launch of the game - published in partnership with Atari !

Two words come to mind: modular ships !!! Oh yeah!!

The Few, the Proud, the EVE Blog Pack Members!

They say, be careful what you wish for; you may get it! Oh how true this is with the EVE Blog Pack.

When I started the pack in mid-June of this year, I wanted to get a group of great bloggers together, get them to post regularly, and to comment on each others sites! Just a month later the Pack had past the mid-20s in membership, and the request were still coming in - are still coming in!

The EVE blogging community's response to the EVE Blog Pack has been beyond my wildest dreams. That Blog Pack post has over 60 comments on it as of today, mostly requests to be added and some of my responses to those bloggers. That's just amazing! Thank you all!

The Privilege of Membership, comes with Responsibilities
As the popularity of the Pack grew, more and more bloggers wanted in. But as my initial goal was to foster both quality and quantity, I couldn't simply accept everyone. There are tons of great EVE blogs out there, all of whom deserve to get noticed. Which is why I've got the EVE Player Blogroll (check the side bar also) where I list every player's blog as quickly as I get requests. But for the Pack, I wanted to create this sense of belonging to an elite group of bloggers.

So I've decided to limit the members to 30 blogs for now - with a few conditions though.

Being part of the Pack comes with its responsibilities and obligations. The first and foremost is to blog regularly. Ideally a few times a week, at the very least once. And that is a no easy feat, believe me. Real Life often gets in the way - as it should since remember people, this is just a game - and missing a week is not uncommon. But going beyond the 3 week mark puts a Pack member in a situation of potentially being removed from the Pack.

This has happened to a few members already. Case in point, today I've removed two blogs for lack of activity. To fill in the empty chairs, the two newest members of the EVE Blog Pack will be Roc's Ramblings and Dawn of EVE. Welcome to the both of you!

                                          Taking it One Step further
Now, along with the regular blogging and commenting, I want to ask a bit more of the Pack Members. This is what will make the Blog Pack different from my Players Blogroll.

Here's a list of ToDos that all members should strive to accomplish as part of their duties.
                                          • Blog regularly about EVE Online, a few times a week preferably.
                                          • Comment on Pack members blogs.
                                          • Make a post about the EVE Blog Pack (if you haven't done so yet). Make sure to link to it!
                                          • Add each member's blog to your Delicious, BlinkList, Reddit, StumbleUpon and/or Technorati accounts.
                                          • Digg posts that you find useful or interesting.
                                          • When writing a post, try to link to each other posts, bringing the community even closer together.
                                          • Have a blogroll listing all the Blog Pack members.
Doing all, or some, of these action items will add value to our individual blogs, and will bring the Pack to a whole new level.

Remember, we're each individually responsible for the success of the Blog Pack. It's up to us to decide what we do with it!

Now get to work people!! ...please... =)

43 months of blogging about EVE Online!

Somehow I was sure that this blog's 3rd anniversary was coming up in late November. Well, lo and behold when I realized earlier today that I've been blogging about EVE since February 12, 2005! That's over 3 and a half years of EVE posts. Man, talk about an long trek!

The reason for my confusion is that I've been tracking traffic using StatCounter since November 2005, and so, somehow, thought that next month was going to be the3rd year anniversary. Thus my mix-up.

Anyways, I thought that I'd look back at the last 3 years of babbling about EVE on this blog and see how the traffic has increased.

                                          July 2008 in Review

I've been wanting to get back to doing these monthly review for sometime now, but was just too busy with other stuff, or too lazy, depending on how you want to see it. Here we go again. I'm blatantly copying Wilhelm of The Ancient Gaming Noob here, as I really like his review format.

So without further ado, let's look at this past month, July 2008.

                                          The Site
                                          • 25 posts
                                          • 74 comments
                                          • 15,668 pageviews
                                          • 10,809 unique visitors
                                          • 2,203 returning visitors
Overall I'm happy with the July post count, though looking back over the last few months I'll want to post more often about what my main character is doing. Over the past several weeks I've put a lot of energy getting the EVE Bloggers Community going, at the expense of posting about Treenara. In the coming months I'll try to give you more regular updates. I've got a few ideas that I need to discuss with Phoenix Labs Executives before though. So keep your eyes open.

                                          More (Ranking) Stats:
                                          • Feed Readers: 254
                                          • Alexa Ranking: 269,182
                                          • Technorati Authority: 70
By the end of August, I'd like to have 300 readers, be below 250,000 for Alexa and get over 100 in Technorati Ranking. If you can help me get there, I'd really appreciate.

                                          The EVE Blog Pack

In the last month the Pack grew by 6 new blogs - including mine, which I had forgotten to include! I've got 2 more that I'm keeping an eye on, which will likely get added by the end of the month. In his July Review, Wilhelm mentions that he's got an idea for the Pack. I'm very curious about it and can't wait to get word from him.

Overall I'm very happy with the results of the EVE Blog Pack. I think that I've managed to get a great group of bloggers together, with a good blogging momentum. If you're reading and would like to join just let me know in the comments of the Pack post.

                                          The Drone Bay Podcast

Just as it was in June, July only saw the release of 2 episodes (#13 and #14). Crovan came back from his stay in the Land of the Rising Sun but had some PC woes, and this being smack in the middle of the summer holidays, it's been difficult to get together on the regular weekly schedule. Hopefully with August things will get back to normal again.

On a good note, we've done the last 2 episodes in front of a live audience using Ventrilo. So far it's been a lot a fun and a great experience for those dropping in to listen to the show as it's being recorded. Crovan as always works his editorial magic, and the Live experiment hasn't affected the quality of the final edited shows. Look for even more listener interactions in the coming weeks.

                                          Wrap-Up

In other news, after a brief stay at Massively.com, my tenure as an EVE columnist comes to an end. My stay wasn't long, but in that time I've made some great friends, which I hope will continue to be so as our paths take different roads. I wrote 3 features for my Have Clone Will Travel column - I invite you to read them if you haven't had a chance as of yet:

                                          Next Month

A year ago I was about to start A-Post-A-Day Challenge which in the end saw me complete 26 posts, 4 shy of my goal. I'm thinking of giving it another go, and invite other EVE Bloggers to join me in this Epic adventure! OK, I may be pushing it here, I mean epic, please! I'm only trying to get pumped-up! Khant t'you feel da blood rush in mie big mussel!!!

                                          Fly Safe, or die trying!

The EVE Online Blog Pack Expands

Over the last several days, a good number of bloggers were added to the EVE Blog pack (Mynxee, Vestik, Karox, to name a few). So many actually, that I felt I needed to remind you to revisit the list.

I also wanted to provide you with the pack feed link so that you may subscribe to it and never have to worry about having to add new blog pack members manually. I've all taken care of this.

All you have to do is add this link to your feed reader of choice, in my case Google Reader, and voila! I'll make sure that each new member get added to that list, so you'll always have the latest list.

                                          Ain't I a darling!!

Now get going, you've got lots to read!!
