The Creator, AGI, and that weird feeling we’re living in a prologue

There’s been a lot of fiction built around the eventual arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), what some folks still call the singularity(*). That mythical moment when the lights flip on, the machine looks back at us, and suddenly we’re not the only conscious thing in the room. Hollywood has had a field day with it: The Terminator, Ex Machina, Ghost in the Shell, Westworld, and now The Creator.

And this last one hits different. It dropped right as chatbots landed in our daily lives. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude. Suddenly these tools weren’t some far-off sci-fi fever dream. They were… well, they were right here, answering our emails(**) and helping us plan vacations and occasionally confabulating(***) nonsense like an overconfident toddler.

That overlap of fiction colliding with reality has always fascinated me. It’s the moment where the stories we’ve told ourselves for decades start brushing up against the world we’re building, sometimes intentionally, sometimes by accident.

Will "The Astronaut" crash or soar? Trailer thoughts

So this trailer for The Astronaut just dropped.

Kate Mara crash-landing back to Earth, Laurence Fishburne running the quarantine, and some weird extraterrestrial presence maybe tagging along for the ride? Yeah, I’m intrigued. It feels like a mix of grounded sci-fi and slow-burn horror, and I kinda dig that vibe.

I don’t know if it’s going to be brilliant or just another “alien hitchhiker” story, but there’s enough here to make me curious. I might actually go see this one in theatres when it lands October 17. Having said that, I’m a little apprehensive about the ending though, since a few (okay, a bunch of them,... okay okay, most of the) critics mentioned it starts strong but stumbles in the final act, so I’m keeping my expectations in check.

At the very least, it’s giving me a reason to keep an eye on Jess Varley as a director, and my options open.

Anyone else planning to check it out?

Friday Video: What if this was a glimpse of DUST 514? [VIDEO]

I'll be honest, I'm getting antsy for some DUST 514 news. Real news. We've been teased by CCP far too many times, and have yet seen any concrete footage of game play. Yeah, yeah, so there was that trailer back in October of 2009, but since then nada! Nothing. I'm really hoping that we'e gonna get some major updates at Fanfest, or else I'm flying off with Nathan's Beer ship and holding it for ransom!

Until then, I'll squint my eyes and imagine this Battlefield 3 video as some DUST 514 trailer. Wouldn't that be awesome!

Damn! If DUST 514 looks anything like this, I might never go back to the MMO. Ok, that might be pushing it, but I'm definitely getting Battlefield 3, for sure!

Friday Video: "Drone 23" & "Solar", by Ben Reubold [VIDEO]

These clips hint at a great talent. I just wish they were a bit longer and that their creator, Ben Reubold, would use some of the New Eden canon for his next one!

Friday Video: Could this be a new DUST 514 Trailer by CCP Games?

OK, clearly the video below - Mass Effect 3 Trailer - isn't the one we're all anticipating. But it does have that dirty, gritty, war-is-a-shit-whole feeling to it, which is what I expect the next DUST 514 trailer will look like. Based on the only DUST 514 trailer CCP has been so kind to release (over a year ago I might add - and nothing since!) we can certainly expect a very polished FPS. Let's just hope that it will have the appeal and breadth of the Mass Effect series!

If you were CCP, what sort of trailer would you release to really get people's attention? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that one!

Hope you'll forgive the tease! Fly safe!

Friday Video (Belated Edition): Cowboys and Aliens [HD VIDEO]

Cowboys & Aliens hits theaters on July 29th, 2011.

Cast: Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford, Noah Ringer, Sam Rockwell, Ana de la Reguera, Clancy Brown, Heavy D, Jon Favreau, Paul Dano, Abigail Spencer, Keith Carradine, Adam Beach

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don't welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It's a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he's been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents-townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors-all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Friday Video: Sintel (A Short Animated Movie)

Though I got word of this last week, through numerous tweets, I only got to see it today. Very impressed with what they were able to achieve with Blender.

Description:
"Sintel" is an independently produced short film, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender. With initial funding provided by 1000s of donations via the internet community, it has again proven to be a viable development model for both open 3D technology as for independent animation film.

This 15 minute film has been realized in the studio of the Amsterdam Blender Institute, by an international team of artists and developers. In addition to that, several crucial technical and creative targets have been realized online, by developers and artists and teams all over the world.
