EVE Blog Banter 68: If I show you my rig, will you show me yours?

They say "Better late than never..." Well that's all fine and dandy, but it makes for a shitty first impression. Or in this case, for a shitty re-introduction. I wanted to jump back into the  EVE Blog Banters, my child of yesteryears, who's all grown up and soon turning six, with a BANG! But the Blog Father is bit rusty, and three days late will have to do!

Enough ramblings (damn, I AM getting old!).

EVE Blog Banter #26: Beyond nebulas and shiny ships

Welcome to the twenty-sixth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week or so to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed to crazykinux@gmail.com. Check for other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!
This month's topic was proposed by @KatiaSae of the much praised "To Boldly Go" blog. Katia asks: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As an astrophotographer, I've found it in the stars and planets of New Eden. Where have you found it? Perhaps you've found beauty in the ships we fly? Maybe it's the sight of profits being added to your bottom line? Or maybe it's the pilot portraits you see in the comm channels? Where ever you've found it, write about it and post an image." Don't be afraid go beyond the simple visual aspects of EVE as well. Is the EVE Community in itself a thing of beauty? What makes EVE the game, the world, the Community, so appealing to you?
EVE looks stunning. It always has, and if the last decade hints to what we can expect in the future, it most likely will continue. Ask a friend, one who's never played an MMO to take a look at a few of your screenshots, and the likely reaction that you're likely to hear is "That's a game?". Followed by "That's the game you play?". Ever since I laid eyes on the universe created by CCP, I knew that this was something different. Way different then anything I had seen before. And this still holds true today.

I still remember being blown away by the trailer that was done to showcase the new Trinity II graphic engine, when all the ships got a visual upgrade. That video still gives me goose bumps.

And yet, the real beauty of EVE to me is beyond the visual aspects of this unique MMO. What really stands out when it comes to EVE is its Community and how supportive we are to one another. Though the universe created by CCP is one of the most hardcore MMO out there, the individuals that are part of it, those that make the Community what it is, the bloggers, podcasters, members of the Tweetfeet, have shown again and again to be one of the best asset of the game. It's the Secret Weapon by which EVE invades the minds of those new to this universe.

The Beauty of EVE lies within its Community.

EVE Blog Banter #25: And by Alliance you mean.....?

Welcome to the twenty-fifth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux.
This month's topic comes to us from @Tetraetc - "Tetra's EVE Blog" - who asks: "Have Alliances and the sovereignty system limited the amount of PVP and RP potential in Null sec? Imagine a Null Sec where anyone could build outposts, wherever. Would the reduction of the Alliance game mechanic, and the removal of the sovereignty game mechanics (and the modifcation of it from Alliance level to Corp level for that matter) force more PVP into Null sec, or would giant power blocs like the NC still form themselves?"
This is one of those rare occasions where it's hard for me to state my opinion. The reason is simple: I just don't think I know enough to grasp the various issues at hand when it comes to Alliances, sovereignty and how all this ties into 0.0 space. I do understand the basics, but to actually suggest that the current alliance game mechanics have a positive or detrimental effect on PvP or RP, and be able to defend my arguments is beyond such understanding. As such, I'll have a lot of reading to do, though I feel confident that I'll be in the know once I go through everyone's Banter! So, without further ado, here they are!

2011, the year of rebirth, and so much more...

It's that time of the year. The time when you look back at the last 12 month and assess what you've accomplished, what you weren't able to do, and weigh all of that. Looking back, 2010 wasn't as bad as I imagined it. I was happily surprised that I had actually written more posst in 2010 than I had the previous year.

Nevertheless, its a far cry from what I had done in 2008, the year where I created the EVE Blogroll, the Blog Pack and the Blog Banter. I guess that's what having a full time job and kids does to you! I could go on and tell you about the number of posts I did, or the comments that they generated. I could also look at the total number of pageviews, or visitors that the blog had, but that's not the purpose of this post.

What I want to focus on right now, is the future. The future of this blog, as well as the future of my gameplay. Blogwise, I want to refocus this blog on EVE Online, with more guides, more updates on what I'm doing in-game, more focus on what the conversation is in the EVE Blogsphere, or the TweetFleet. I probably will continue posting non-EVE related material, but I want enough EVE-focused posts that it will seem more like an "EVE Blog", rather than a "Geek Blog"! See what I did here! :p.

Of course the EVE Blog Banters will continue, and I'll certainly try to give you a better heads-up, as well as participate more so than I have recently done. The New Eden Chronicles podcast with @MaeveTrinity, @Ardwulf and @Memoocan_NEC will continue as well (on a side note, we're still waiting for Apple to get its act together and list the podcast on iTunes). So please let us know your thoughts and requests!

I also want to put more focus on my gameplay and relate to you what I'm currently doing in-game. That's something I used to do years ago, but had stopped to put more focus on the EVE Community. I'd like to share that with you again.

I still have a bit of catch-up to do on my emails. So if you've written to me about getting added to the EVE Blog Pack, or for some specific request, do not despair. I WILL REPLY to you!

So here's to 2011, year of rebirth, year of focus! And thanks for sticking around for so long. Your company has been a treasure of inspiration!

Fly safe!

EVE Blog Banter #23: Rome wasn't built in a day, neither was New Eden

Welcome to the twenty-third installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux.
With Incursion giving us glimpses of what Incarna will have to offer (the the Character Creator), this month's topic, by @Minerpewpew, comes just at the right time. He asks "What are your thoughts on how Incarna will effect the current EVE Online social dynamic?" I'd like to see this questioning go a bit further. How will this affect EVE's player base? Who will Incarna attract? New players to the genre? Seduce old players back into the game? Will we see new players come in that will never leave their station? Please explore to the best of your abilities!
EVE Online is a game about spaceship combat. Right? I mean, in the end what ever you do in this virtual world, the result is some ship, somewhere, somehow, gets blown to smithereens! That's the whole purpose of the game right? Not quite so.

EVE has always been a lot more then just blowing ships up, whether against NPCs or real flesh and bones opponents. New Eden is a world of traders, miners, industrialist, mercenaries, espionage, political intrigue. And so much more. Over the years, CCP has built upon this universe of alter egos to create much more then a "game of Internet spaceships".

Over three years ago, when we first saw glimpses of - as it was called then - "Walking in Stations" all of a sudden EVE was no longer just about Space, about Ships, or Asteroids and minerals. Suddenly our avatars were no longer simple portraits. They were no longer this abstract concept of a body in a capsule within a powerful spaceship. To some, this was the promise land. To others, an inconvenient waste of precious developer resources. To many of us, it was a far away illusion that could not be grasped. Like sand in water.

Incarna has the potential to a lot for EVE Online. If CCP plays its cards right, Incarna could be the most important expansion to launched. But the window of opportunity is very narrow, and the potential for disaster exists, even if it is small.

If Incarna is to be successful, it will need to
  • No impact on the current game as it is. That is it must not create lag to the "spaceship game", or be a requirement for those who do not wish to partake (missions for examples should still be accessible from docked ships)
  • Be more then a simply avatars in an empty station. It needs to provide a means to create, to manage, to interact in a constructive and fun way with patrons (other players). And from what we've seen demonstrated, CCP understands this very well.
  • Be part of the EVE universe, and not simply a separate game within a game.
If done well, Incarna will attract both some of the current players - myself included - curious about this new land of opportunity, and new players for whom the personification of an avatar is important. Let's face it, some MMO players out there have a hard time identifying themselves with a spaceship. We don't, they do. And Incarna will be a way to bring them in New Eden. At first they may not venture outside their station, but some will. And a whole new world will open up to them.

Now I can see a few of you already raising their hands and jumping up and down to tell me that CCP shouldn't change EVE, just fix what's broken and let the spaceship game be. I also hear the others that say that Incarna is just a test bed for the other MMO CCP is developing - which I believe involves fangs if I'm correct. You're all correct. But Incarna is a lot more then that.

Incarna is a means by which CCP will attract new players, new paying customers. Revenues which will help both the current "spaceship game" and the up coming "avatar game". It's a delicate balancing act yes, but one which I believe they can deliver. With new players, comes the assurance that EVE will continue, that it will evolve. Not everyone will be pleased of course, but who would expect that.

We've been waiting a long long time for it, but I for one am willing to give CCP and their Devs the chance they deserve.

And I hope to see you walk into my bar, sometime in the not so far future, and we can share a pint of whatever it is that you drink. The first one will be on me!

EVE Blog Banter #22: The Belated Edition

We may already be in November - and the 10th at that! - but October's EVE Blog Banter was held back on October 26th and quite a few of you participated. Unfortunately I didn't not. Elements that were out of my control prevented me from participating this time, though not from lack of interest.

EVE Blog Banter #21: The Lure of the Wild

Welcome to the twenty-first installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by none other than me, CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed to crazykinux@gmail.com. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!
This month topic comes to us from @ZoneGhost who a few month ago asked “Is Low Sec the forgotten part of EVE Online?” Is it? I’d like us to explore this even further. Is Low Sec being treated differently by CCP Games than Null Sec (Zero-Zero) or Empire space is? Can one successfully make a living in these unsecured systems where neither Alliance nor Concord roam to enforce their laws? What’s needed? Or is everything fine as it is?
The Wilds. A No Mans Land where pirates can hunt you down and ransom you, where you become canon fodder. That's the perception of Low Sec. Except there's a problem. It's rarely true. And that's where part of the problem with this vast territory that exists between Empire Space and Null Sec.

As many of you know I've been a Carebear for as long as I've been playing EVE, which is over 6 years now. And as many of you, I used to try to avoid Low Sec (and Null Sec as well for that matter) like it was the plague. But then I began to travel long distances, which saw me travel in Low Sec for many systems. After a while I started to notice something strange: Low Sec is a very empty and lonely place. Where is everybody?

Now I've never been a pirate, so I can't tell you how these folks make a living in Low Sec. What I can tell you though is that is should have been blown up and podded many more times then has happened over the years. And yes, I'm avoiding all together the PvE that's available in Low Sec. To me Low Sec should be the ultimate PvP arena. A wild realm where more often then none, one would be faced with destruction and "life and death" combat at the hands of pirate and poachers!

So I'm very happy to see folks like Mynxee put together an initiative like the "Making Low Sec Matter committee" in an effort to reinvigorate this vast underdeveloped area of New Eden. Not to say that CCP hasn't done its share trying to bring in capsuleers to this practically uninhabited part of our universe; but when dedicated, intelligent and knowledgeable players come together to improve our game, good things can only come out of this!

And in a few month, when I have roamed Low Sec looking for a victim, and know more about Low Sec, maybe I'll venture myself to a few ways for improvements. For the time being, I'll let the experienced partake in this noble project.

EVE Blog Banter #20: Care for a little griefing tonight?

Welcome to the twentieth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by none other than me, CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. With the recent completion of the 3rd installment of the Hulkageddon last July, @CyberinEVE, author of Hands Off, My Loots!, asks: "Griefing is a very big part of EVE. Ninja Salvaging, Suicide Ganking, Trolling, and Scamming are all a very large part of the game. What do you think about all these things? You can talk about one, or all...but just let us know your overall opinion on Griefing, and any recommendations you may have to change it if you think it's needed."

EVE Blog Banter #19: Growing Pains

Welcome to the nineteenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by none other than me, CrazyKinux.
This months topic comes to us from @evepress, who he asks: The CSM: CCP's Meta Game? The CSM, an EVE players voice to CCP. Right? In the grand scheme of things yes, the players bring up issues and the CSM presents them to CCP. But in its current iteration the CSM was supposed to be given small authority to assign CCP assets to projects that the CSM thought needed work on. As it has come out, this was not the case. So fellow bloggers, is the CSM worth it, has the CSM improved the game in any way, or is it just a well thought out scam by CCP to give us players a false sense of input in the game? What's your take?
Talk about a loaded question!

EVE Blog Banter #18: The Heroes with a Thousand Faces

Welcome to the eighteenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by none other than me, CrazyKinux.
On May 6th 2010, EVE Online celebrated its 7th Anniversary. Quite a milestone in MMO history, especially considering that it is one of the few virtual worlds out there to see its population continually grow year after year. For some of you who've been here since the very beginning, EVE has evolved quite a lot since its creation. With the expansion rolling out roughly twice a year, New Eden gets renewed and improved regularly. But, how about you the player? How has your gaming style evolved through the years or months since you've started playing? Have you always been a carebear, or roleplayer? Have you only focused on PvP or have you given other aspects of the game a chance - say manufacturing. Let's hear your story!
Six years! Six wonderful long years in which I've had the opportunity to fly with 7 different corporations, one of which I was the CEO of a one-man corp! I've flown with capsuleers from Coreli, TAKAGI, and a few others, but the one corporation which has had the greatest impact on my life amongst the star was Phoenix Propulsion Labs. PPL was my home for 4 years in all. During that time, I met with some amazing folks, some of whom I had the privileged to meet face to face in Las Vegas.

Steady as she goes Captain - Judgment begins for the Blog Banter Contest

When I initially launched the latest EVE Blog Banter Contest - The Ladies of New Eden - I expected to get roughly the same amount of entries as with previous popular banters - maybe 40. Or maybe even as much as the last Banter Contest which was about 60. But 80 entries? Not in my wildest dreams!

As such, I'm going to need a bit more time to go through all these entries and am pushing the winners announcement up to Friday May 7th, 2010 - tough if I can do it sooner, I will.

To make up for this delay, I've decided to bump up the number of winner to 10. Not only that, but Avalloc, one of the candidates for the 5th Council of Stellar Management, was kind enough to offer 1 Billion ISKs for all 10 winners!

So, to recap the Prizes to be awarded are:

  • 1st Place: $75 in EVE Store merchandise and 100 million ISKs
  • 2nd Place: $50 in EVE Store merchandise and 100 million ISKs
  • 3rd, 4th & 5th Place: $25 in EVE Store merchandise each and 100 million ISKs each
  • Prizes for 6th to 10th place are 100 million ISKs each
I hope this will make up for the delay, and that you'll bare with me as I ponder on who are the 10 best entries out of those 80 submitted!

EVE Blog Banter #16: The Three Pillars of Wisdom

Welcome to the sixteenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by none other than me, CrazyKinux.
The third Blog Banter of 2010 comes to us from ChainTrap of the Into the unknown with gun and camera EVE Blog. He asks us: "Eve University turns six years old on March 15th; six years spent helping the new pilots of New Eden gain experience and understanding in a supportive environment. EVE is clearly a complicated game, with a ton to learn, so much that you never stop learning. So, the question is; What do you wish that someone had taken the time to tell you when you were first starting out? Or what have you learned in the interim that you'd like to share with the wider Eve community?"
Having roamed the far reaches of New Eden over the last 6 years, I've had the chance and the opportunity to share through this blog a plethora of information. Information I would wish had been shared with me when I was still wet behind the ears as a capsuleer. But that is the process of learning, and looking back at the past, looking at your past mistakes, your past ambitions become obvious as foolish and silly meanderings.

If I could go back with the knowledge I currently possess, I would share with my younger self the following...

1) Train those Learning Skills - One of the first thing a new capsuleer does is spot the biggest, meanest ship he or she can find, look at the skills needed to fly one and start learning and buying those skills. Anyways, that what I did. Even as a Carebear. I think that it was years later that I came across "Learning Skills". What the hell? What are those? When I realized the months of training I could have shaved off, I felt like an idiot. I wish I had been told to split my training between learning skills and the other skills.

2) The 10 Commandments of New Eden - I wish that somewhere will missioning or mining I had had the chance to find these 10 pieces of advice. I originally wrote them almost 2 yeas ago, but they still hold very true today:
  1. The only place where you're safe in EVE is either docked or offline, otherwise you're mostly fair game.
  2. You will eventually get podded. It's nothing personal.
  3. So make sure your clone is up to date
  4. At any given time, make sure you're always training a skill.
  5. EVE is like a sandbox with landmines. Deal with it.
  6. You're flying in a cocoon full of liquid, known as a pod. Not behind the controls of a ship.
  7. Flying a ship anywhere in EVE is like gambling, only fly what you're willing to lose.
  8. CONCORD exists to punish, not to protect.
  9. If you're going to be in a low sec system for a while, create 2 or more safe spots, just in case.
  10. Pirates are not griefers, they're as much a part of EVE as you are.
3) The right Corporation make all the difference - This is probably the most important aspect when starting in EVE, and the main reason which sees so many newcomers leave New Eden. It took a few years for me to find the corporation that matched my playing style, my availability and goals within EVE. Years later I would write this article in hopes to avoid the bunny hopping I once did early in my career.

Much more pixels could be laid down on these screens in hopes of sharing all the wisdom us old capsuleers have. But I believe it all boils down to the above.

EVE Online is not a game. It's a world. Virtual yes, but the implications of that difference make it that much more complex. That much more enjoyable. Full of unknowns, of opportunities, of dreams.

Fly, whether safe or not, but make sure to enjoy the ride!

Lovers of EVE Online - Blog Banter Winners

If there's one thing that shines through all the entries - all 56 of them - it's the passion that these bloggers have for this vast and harsh landscape on the InterTubes we call New Eden. As I sat through the cold February night, reading and rereading all these articles, I couldn't but help myself but feel pride at the accomplishments, achievements and opportunities of all we've been able to accomplish within and through EVE Online.

And so, it was with the utmost care and consideration that I started picking, choosing, weighing in all these testimonials to our communal passion for the virtual world we spend so much time living in, dreaming of, plan for and talking about. The result of this process is listed below. But before you drop your eyes a few lines to look at the listing, please remember that 46 other bloggers took the time to write and submit their entries, and they all deserve the recognition. SO please consider dropping by some of these and letting them know through a comment.

So wither further ado, here are your 10 winners!
                                        1. 1st Prize - $100 in EVE Store merchandise: Wench with a Wrench

                                        2. 2nd Prize - $50 in EVE Store merchandise: Don't Fear the Mutant

                                        3. 3rd Prize- $25 in EVE Store merchandise: Into the unknown with gun and camera

                                        4. 4th Prize - $25 in EVE Store merchandise: Sered's Lives

And the following bloggers each win a 14 Day EVE Time Code:

IMPORTANT: I've got one more request for these winners. I need all 10 of you to write a follow-up post on the same blog you submitted your entry, in which you'll provide me with your email. This way, I'll ensure that I don't get an email from someone pretending to be a winner and asking for his prize. Please let me know you've done that by a quick comment below.

Congratulations again to all of you!

EVE Blog Banter #14: A beginning is a very delicate time...

Welcome to the fourteenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by none other than me, CrazyKinux.
The first banter of 2010 comes to us from the EVE Blog Father, in which I ask the following: As we begin another year in New Eden, ask yourselves "What Now?" What will I attempt next? What haven't I done so far in EVE? Was it out fear, funds, or knowledge? Have I always wanted to start my own corporation, but have never dared doing so? Is there a fledging mercenary waiting to come out of its shell? Or maybe an Industrialist? What steps and objectives will I set myself to accomplish in order to reach my ultimate goal for this year? EVE is what you make of it. So, what is it going to be for you?
Beginning anew. Well sort of. You see, 2009 wasn't the best of year for my career as a capsuleer. Not that I did not a lack of motivation or a will to try out new things. But circumstances outside of New Eden forced me to put aside most if not all of these goals and for the better part of the year I, for lack of a better word, stagnated. Literally.

I feel out of touch with the game. That might sound funny to some of you, but it's a fact I've had to come to grips with. I'm like one of these ol'war vets who due to some traumatic event, have lost all acquired abilities. Or maybe I'm just outdated, following the last few expansions.

But 2010 will see this situation change. If I may remind you of a post I made back in May of last year, this fellow capsuleer is going to start living in the shadows. As a carebear, I spend most of my time trying to avoid conflicts and dreading that sound you here when your ship is being acquired as a target. No more. This stops today!

So, I've finally completed the Phoenix Labs minimum skill prerequisites and can now start to train the necessary skills to become the Covert Operative that is hiding somewhere under the thick blubberry fur of this carebear.

Now having such a goal is fine and dandy, but I'll need to discuss my role within PPL and see how the Executives have in mind for me. Remember, "Corp is Mother!".

I plan to report over the next few weeks and throughout the next year, my progress, my achievements and my failures in the process.

                                        Please bare with me!

EVE Blog Banter #13: Your mission, should you decide to accept it...

Welcome to the thirteenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed here. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!
The first banter of this 2nd year of EVE Blog Banters comes to us from Zargyl from A Sebiestor Scholar, who asked the following: On the EVE Fanfest 2009 page are pictures of prizes for the Silent Auction that was held during the event. One of these photos was entitled “Design your own EVE mission”. My question now would be what kind of mission would you write if you got that prize? What would the mission be about? Would it be one using the new system of epic mission arks? What would be the story told by it? Feel free to expand upon his questions and put together your very own mission!

EVE is known as the sand box of MMOs, where PvP is the core and heart of the game, and PvE is but an afterthought. But that would be stretching it a bit. Player versus Environment, or PvE, has indeed been neglected in the past, but in recent times, it has received some much needed TLC from the CCP Devs. One thing is for certain though, it'll take a lot more of that sweet viking love to bring PvE up to par with PvP!

Currently my time in EVE is somewhat very limited, if none at all. So I feel somewhat ill prepared to dive deep into this very complex essay of mission design. As such, I'll give the center stage to the folks below, knowing that they'll do a much better job then I would at this present time in my capsuleer career. I look forward to reading, commenting and discussing everyone's ideas!

This month's banter comes to us from none other than me, myself and I, and I ask the following: First there was the MMO on the PC, and now with the recent announcement of DUST 514, EVE will soon be moving onto consoles. But what about mobile? Allow your imagination to run wild for a second and describe how you would see EVE being ported to mobile devices, whether the iPhone/iPod touch, Blackberrys or Android-based devices. Dream the impossible for us!

EVE Blog Banter #11: The Few, the Proud, the next Tech 3 ships!

Welcome to the eleventh installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. This month's banter comes to us from Joe Brusati a long time reader of CrazyKinux's Musing, who asks the following: CCP states that T3 Strategic Cruisers are just the start for the T3 line-up. In future Eve expansions what would you like to see as the next T3 ship type. Please be specific on details about what role this ship would play, cost of manufacturing, and the different modules that would be available for it, and of course you must give your T3 ship a name!
Well, I definitely wanted to participate in this month's Banter, but an unforeseen event last week prevented me from doing so, as well as preventing me from posting anything on this blog since last Tuesday. Indeed, though my wife and I were expecting our second child to come into this world sometime in early September, the little fellow had other plans and stepped into the spotlight on Thursday morning. Let me tell you that this surprise "happily" wrecked my well planned schedule for the next few days. I'll have more on that story in another post. But for now, let's get to the Banter articles!

Thanks to all those who participated, and my apologies for being a day late!

EVE Blog Banter #10: It's just a game!

Welcome to the tenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux.
This month's banter leans a little, OK a lot, on the academic side. It comes to us from xiphos83 of A Misguided Adventurer, who asks the following: " Victor Davis Hanson argues that western culture, comprising of ideals such as freedom, debate, capitalism, and consensual government, are what make western society so successful at waging war. These ideologies create a warrior who's direct participation in government, ability to think freely, and desire to remain free, fights harder and is willing to suffer more than his conscripted foe. Though a military must remain a structured oligarchy to fight a war effectively, why in a world where military conflict is as familiar as breathing are there so few alliances that embrace these ideologies when governing their members?"

Now, first I must apologize. This Banter went live on Monday, which makes me two days late. I could come up with lots of crazy excuses, but the reality is we've been getting such a lousy weather these past few weeks that whenever we get a few dry and sunny evenings we tend to spend them outside. Which is what happened on Monday and Tuesday earlier this week. That may or may not explain why we've gotten so few entries in this month's Banter. Then again, it is the summer holidays.

                                        Anyways, lets get to business!

If I understand Xiphos83's question, we're being asked "why aren't Alliances true oligarchies made up off individual somewhat-democratic corporations that defend and protect their interest through a dictatorial structure?" I remember reading a book a few years ago entitled "The Last Ship", in which early in the book the captain of a nuclear destroyer explains that it takes a dictatorship (the military) to defend a democracy. But how do we apply this to EVE?

The answer is two fold I believe.

First their are as many possible structure for alliances as there are for corporations. And anyone who has been playing EVE long enough to be in a few corps will attest that each has its own command structure. Some are military-based, while others have a more open chain of command, if they have any. If we were to take my corporation, Phoenix Labs has an open military structure and in a communistic approach to it's wealth. That is, each member has a rank and is promoted according to performance and dedication, and each members earnings is given back to the corp. We're only allowed to keep about 2M ISKs. Now Alliances are a different type of monster and can be, and in most cases are, very difficult beasts to control, for a simple reason actually. Which brings me to my second point.

EVE Online is a game. And as in any game, weather RPG, board game, CCG, and others, is played first and foremost for fun (well except for a few wako cases). Fun, not duty. Not responsibilities. And as long as being part of a corporation, or to an alliance provides those rush of endorphins, then that's that all that will be needed to allow these gaming groups to prosper and thrive. In real life, in my professional responsibilities, the consequences of failing a task may in some cases result in my being fired, which has very real consequences. Something that just isn't the case in EVE.

Because, in the end, EVE is just a game. It's just Internet spaceships!
