DUST 514: EVE Online to get its First Person Shooter

Oh boy am I excited about this one! I've been dreaming for quite some time about an FPS for EVE, and now CCP has announced that its Shanghai studio has been working on such a game! I first mentioned this desire of mine back in May of last year when I hinted that an EVE Online shooter would look somewhat like the dark and gory Gears of War XBOX 360 game. Later that year we got a glimpse of such a game (check the last video) but the details weren't too clear. Was this some sort of tease, or teaser? And then as recently as June of this year, I wrote an article about a possible EVE FPS. Man do I like to be proven right!

Here are some additional details provided in the Press Release:
DUST 514, featuring first-person shooter and RTS-style gameplay, will interact directly with EVE Online, CCP’s critically acclaimed flagship MMO. This interplay between the two games opens the EVE universe to console gamers and gives them a chance to become part of one of the most massive cooperative play and social experiences ever.

[...]

The primary gameplay of DUST 514 features brutal ground combat that takes place on the surface of planets from EVE, delivering the visceral, adrenaline-fueled experience of futuristic firefights. Developed for the current generation of consoles, DUST 514 combines equal parts battlefield reflexes and strategic planning, giving commanders and ground infantry real-time configurable weapons and modular vehicles to manage dynamic battlefield conditions.

Now entering its third year of production, DUST 514 is the primary development focus of CCP’s Shanghai studio. The team includes veteran designers of EVE Online and experienced talent from various sectors of the video game industry.
Add to that the fact that the idea behind my latest contest is about integrating planetary conquest into the EVE the MMO, and you'll understand why I'm pretty proud of myself at this very moment!

OK, that's enough chest pounding alpha-male behavior for one day! Back to my humble self I return. Still, I'm fracking excited about this one. Seriously!

WOWWW those pics look GREAT!!!
I would looove to see those in-game as well (e.g. with planetary conquest 0:-) ) and not "just" in a console game playing in the EVE universe).

What press release? You mention it, but don't link to it...

From the trailer it seems that this will effect souvereignity in 0.0.

How do you feel about that ?

Sounds like an incredibly dumb game mechanic if that's true.

Sounds like the best sovereignty reform one can get. Actual PvP (even of the console variety) rather than having people shoot at dead items as if it's some sort of WoW raid. The planetary conquest idea wasn't really much different on its own, I mean, moving NPC 'marines' around like bags of potatoes? Not much better, really. But actual players? Way cool.

Maybe alliances will end up acquiring 'ground branches' of console gamers. Awesome.

I dunno CK a brand version 1.0 first person shooter alone has a whole lot to prove in a very mature genre even without integration into existing IP.

After that its EVE universe integration has to be compelling.

That's a lot of things to get right in a 1.0 product.

To me this doesn't sound like a good idea. I have to organize a bunch of leet kids to claim space now and hope they don't tick off the wrong alliance? And because I don't have a console, I can't join in? ugh.

Oh... would these people be able to, say, walk in stations? ;)

Interesting part is plan to integrate the planetside FPS into online play.

That takes my breath away.

I don't know how it will be implemented, but it sounds amazing. My head is spinning with the possibilities.

Ive written my view here(http://connect.tweveit.com/keldar/blog/2009/dust-514-separating-the-fact-from-the-speculation.html), but I will summarize.

THIS IS FREAKING SWEET! All you nay sayers are basing your opinions on speculation, check out the facts, and you will see that this game is PURE grade A 100% WINSAUCE!

Looks like you were right on the money Crazy, congrats! Back when I was - more or less - an IBM watcher for my previous employer, I had a few of these occassions and it's very sweet indeed. Good for your reputation amongst your peers, too, but I'm not sure you needed that boost ;-)

I have blogged some questions about Dust 514, mainly about ambulation and possible integration of Eve and Dust in future expansions. But the bottom line is: if CCP can pull this off, we'll end with a bigger paying player base for the EVE Universe, and that is certainly a good thing :)

There has yet to be a single truly succesful FPS MMO, especially one with compelling gameplay.

As much as I'd like to see CCP succeed with this project I'm extremely skeptical, while also set back as to why they went console only on a title alienating their current PC playerbase.

Given that, then you talk about the FPS affecting Eve-Online with two totally disconnected communities.. not good.

I love the idea, however I am only a 6 million skill pt EVE character. I will be disappointed if Dust isn't also released for the PC!
