Who knew: Girls Like Playing EVE Online! [VIDEO]

The above title is of course meant as a teaser, since I know a fair amount of women playing EVE - and not just the carebearing kind! I came across the Youtube channel of @Mintchiplol, a new Twitter follower of mine. And after watching a few of her videos, I came across the one below.

Now @Mintchiplol from what I gather seems to be quite the PvP gamer, though she's fairly new to New Eden. So it was interesting to see how she describes how EVE is a more complex MMO environment then what she was familiar with in Word of Warcraft. Not  a bashing of WoW here, but just interesting to see how a newbie can quickly nail the main differences between a theme-park MMO and a sand-box. Thanks for the videos @Mintchiplol and hope to see you in space!

On a side note, her YouTube channel and her series of videos on EVE gave me a few ideas. Something I'll start working on soon...

Fly safe!

The NPE in Dominion - A CCP Eris Discordia Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview the developer responsible for the New Player Experience (NPE) in the upcoming Dominion Expansion at CCP Games, none other than CCP Eris Discordia. Below is the result of my interrogation. Please feel free to comment and ask additional questions!

Enjoy

What was the main goal of the changes you brought forth with the NPE?

While the NPE is continuously evolving, the goal of the Dominion changes is to teach skills to new players that should make them valuable to any corporation as talented recruits. Aside from that, we also wanted to gain a better understanding of how the NPE is experienced by new players. To do this we added a lot of data logging in the tutorials and career paths, to identify areas for improvement. These areas are indicated by red flags in data--for example, when thousands of people read one tutorial three times we see that spike and know that the there is an issue with the tutorial. It may simply be confusing or there may be a larger problem. Once we’ve identified an area, the idea is that we then focus on it to make it better.

21 EVE Online acronyms for newbies

While setting up my Myrmidon for PvP, I came across a couple of new acronyms I'd never heard before. And that got me thinking. All these noobs joining EVE right now and coming along the forums trying to understand it all and put some good setups for their ships will most likely run into these difficulties. This is especially true when it comes to modules.

So in order to help you, here's my list of ten acronyms or terms you've got to know:
  1. Newbie, noob: a new player
  2. Carebear: an EVE player who does not engage in PVP
  3. MWD: Microwarp Drive (1/10/100 MN)
  4. AB: Afterburner (1/10/100 MN)
  5. Hardener: Armour or Shield hardener, both active and passive
  6. EANM: Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane
  7. RMR: Red Moon Rising
  8. PVP: Player vs Player
