Zero Punctuation's EVE Online Review

The last two days have been very hectic while I work various game related job hunting tasks. I've got two posts I had 2 posts I wanted to release earlier today (August Review and Speedlinking), but reality kicked in and those will just have to wait until tomorrow.

In the mean time I wanted to share this video review - more rant than review actually - of EVE Online. I became aware of this "most interesting of" review after a few friends pointed me to the latest Zero Punctuation video review. This time around Yahtzee gave EVE a look and prior to committing seppuku, put the above review together. Highly enjoyable, as always!

Enjoy and fly safe!!

I didn't enjoy his usual rant as much as you did, CK. Here's my review of his review:

Same here. I don't agree with anything he says, but I still find it funny! =)

It's funny. The thing to remember is he's incapable of liking an MMO. I enjoyed it but it did seem like he didn't step out of his noob starter ship or do anything worthwhile. I'll probably watch this again soon though.

Winged Nazgul, you've made some very interesting comments in your review of the ZP EVE review. Indeed he missed a lot of the good stuff he could have poked fun at instead of missing the point about EVE's sand box approach.

Shame on him

So with the caveat that he's reviewed a massively multiplayer game built around PvP without shooting at or interacting with anyone, he does have some valid points:

EVEs interface *is* terrible, the missions *are* all just variations on "Go here, shoot things", it *does* take forever to get anywhere, and there isn't much variation in the environments.

The appeal of EVE lies in the fact that it has meaningful PvP, vast numbers of players, and a deep economy which is pretty much entirely player driven.

But two weeks isn't long enough to get involved in any of that, it's long enough to hate the UI and get bored of the missions, which is what he did - fair enough, I figure.

All true Phil. Oh how so true you are. Then again, CCP is aware and working on fixing these.

The two week trials are too short. Maybe every trial account should come with an EVE Big Brother offer where a veteran player tags along with the newb to help him out and give him a taste of what EVE is really about. My 2 cents.
