The Safe Spot — Episode 2: "The Depths of Eve Online"

Since you can't call it a podcast series without a few episodes, here's Episode 2 of The Safe Spot! In this episode, Rixx and I went deep — maybe a little too deep. We barely touched the agenda (again, I know!), but what we did cover was worth every detour.

I'm still peeling back layers of New Eden, Rixx shared the full story of how he became one of lowsec's most notorious pirates, and we somehow ended up talking ship skins, Pochven, and the philosophy behind why EVE hooks us the way it does. Oh, and I introduced Rixx to end the show. Yeah, go figure!

Here's what we got into.

Show Notes / Table of Contents

  1. My Return to New Eden—I talk about rediscovering EVE Online after a long break — the rabbit holes, the layers, and why the game keeps pulling me deeper.
Exploring Exploration (and Everything Else)— I've moved from running security missions into exploration, cloaking, and figuring out fittings — all while queuing up weeks of skill training.
Old Characters, New Direction— I dusted off Crazy Kinux instead of my older mining-focused character, wanting a fresh gameplay path, and used the AIR program to get rolling.

  2. Ship Skins: A Quick How-To—Rixx walks me through how ship skins actually work — where to find them, how to apply them from the fitting window, and why you don't need to carry them around in your cargo.

  3. The Pirate Life— Rixx explains what piracy actually means in EVE today — from the Guristas insurgency and faction warfare to maintaining a -10 security status for over a decade. What -10 Actually Looks Like—Rixx breaks down the practical reality of being a permanent criminal: no docking in highsec, getting shot freely, sneaking through in shuttles, and why alts exist.

  4. Rixx's Origin Story: From Null to Pirate—Rixx traces his path from Providence sov warfare and the CVA/AAA conflict through Syndicate, Lucifer's Hammer, the Tuskers, and ultimately founding Stay Frosty. Why Big Fleets Weren't for Him—The frustration of fitting up a ship, jumping one gate, getting primaried, and spending 17 jumps podding home while the fight carries on without you. Stay Frosty and "Solo Together"—How Stay Frosty operates day to day — everyone flying solo, but rallying together when someone spots a juicy target or needs backup.

  5. Pochven, Triglavians, and Wormholes—I stumble through some Triglavian-infested systems on a shopping run, which leads into a quick teaser on Pochven space and the rabbit hole of wormhole exploration.

  6. The Podcast Itself: Feedback, Plans, and Growing Pains—Listener shoutouts (hey, Canuck Down Under), the plan to eventually syndicate to Spotify and Apple Podcasts, and an honest admission that the agenda went completely out the window — again. Content Philosophy—We talk about creating the kind of EVE content we wish existed when we were starting out — demystifying the game one layer at a time.

  7. My Intro for Rixx (Used as a Sendoff)—I read a written intro I'd prepared for Rixx — pirate, storyteller, creator, FanFest regular — and it accidentally turns into the episode's closing moment.

  8. "Good Fight" — Original Rap Outro—Rixx closes with a full original piece about lowsec honor, solo PvP, and the spirit of typing "GF" in local.

[I wrote this post on March 14th, but am posting this on the day it came out, February 24th. Life gets in the way sometimes.]
